I am a professor of eighteenth-century British literature who practices “distant reading” and text mining. I am busy composing a dictionary that analyzes thousands of metaphors of mind collected from print and electronic editions of Restoration and eighteenth-century prose, plays, and poems. I have assembled, taxonomized, and alphabetized these metaphors in order to give a broad characterization of one aspect of eighteenth-century discourse. Technology enables my approach to discourse, but my research remains situated in the longer tradition of philology and intellectual history.

I’m interested in text-mining and literary criticism.

I am completing a book project: Eighteenth-Century Metaphors of Mind, A Dictionary.
