I am currently ABD, making progress on a dissertation in cultural anthropology. My research is based on fieldwork in Havana, over a period of about two years. I’m interested in how notions about the state and nationality are intertwined in everyday practices, particularly economic practices that have become ambiguously legal in Cuba in the post-Soviet era.

Other hats I wear at UVA: I’m a graduate student associate for the Teaching Resource Center, where I provide consulting to other grads on their teaching. I’m also a research assistant in the Department of Science, Technology, and Society, in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. There, I work on an NSF-funded research project studying the relationship between modern practices of surveillance and transparency as “systems of accountability.” The project focuses especially on new information technologies—how they shape and are shaped by such systems.
