George Sampson / Profile

Lecturer, Arts Administration | Faculty

I have been at UVA since 1994, having been hired as Director of Development for the Arts, from whose office the Arts Grounds project (Ruffin Hall construction, Fayerweather Hall renovation, Campbell Hall expansion) emerged. Since 2006, I have pioneered courses in Arts Administration, housed in Art History. My interest is in using the arts (both visual and performing, both non-profit and for-profit) as tools for both encouraging creativity in a broad sense, and for community-building among diverse constituencies, on Grounds and in the larger community. In fall, 2008, with many Arts Administration students taking the lead, we produced the Bill T. Jones Artist in Residence project, November 9 – 16; a research project designed to enable close student angagement with a major international creator, while also providing him with material for an upcoming commission. Bill is creating an evening-length performance piece honoring the life of Abraham Lincoln on the 200th anniversary of his birth. The World Premiere will be at Ravinia, near Chicago, Serptember 17, 2009. A major documentary film by Kartemquin Films on Bill’s multi-year creation process, including his stop at UVA, will also be forthcoming. Also, a two-DVD multi-media business case on the branding and stewarding of intellectual property, using the music of the Doors and the Dave Matthews Band as material, is forthcoming from the Darden School, based on panels produced by Arts Administration in 2007, and for which I am co-author.
