The Digital Departmental Initiative
The Digital Departments Initiative (DDI) is a collaboration between SHANTI, the University of Virginia Office of Web Communications, and other organizational units to help academic departments fully leverage digital technologies in their teaching, research, engagement, and publication.
The initiative employs a two-pronged approach to creating and sustaining a dynamic digital infrastructure for department-wide needs.
- First, the underlying architecture of individual departmental websites is brought in line with the most recent advances in web technology that the University has to offer. Departments may choose to retain the look and feel of their current public website or work with the Office of Web Communications to change it completely.
- Second, through a series of intensive consultations with SHANTI, key departmental needs are identified and built into this new architecture, allowing members to develop shared resources and technological tools best suited to these needs. Examples could include: shared sets of resources for teaching and research; tools for enhanced intra-department communication; collaborative text construction; databases (including media databases); and record-sharing for better administrative workflow.
